What’s behind the name: Ocktoberfest?

No, you are not seeing things, and no, surprisingly that’s not a typo either. The untraditional spelling of Ocktoberfest was, in fact, a throwback to the oldest “Oktoberfest” on record. The original Munich, Germany Ocktoberfest dates back 175 years. The festivities began on October 12, 1810 (the same day Celebration, FL introduces its very 1st Ocktoberfest Celebration). In the following years, the celebrations were repeated and, later, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September.

By moving the festivities up, it allowed for better weather conditions. Because the September nights were warmer, the visitors were able to enjoy the gardens outside the tents and the stroll over “die Wiesen” or the fields much longer without feeling chilly. Historically, the last Ocktoberfest weekend was in October and this tradition continues into present times, with most modern day festivals referred to as “Octoberfest” or “Oktoberfest”.

Come out and enjoy this fun, family-friendly Ocktoberfest celebration!
