Holidays = food, a lot of food and all sorts of variety. Oftentimes we can’t resist letting our pets enjoy some of the feast. However, we must be mindful of the foods our pets eat during the holidays.

The abundance of food during the holidays is the cause of many pets having stomach upset requiring medication or even surgery. Some foods are toxic to your pet. Avocados, chocolate, coffee and macadamia nuts are just a few of the foods that are poisonous to your pet. It is very easy for a determined pooch or feline to jump to unbelievable heights to acquire a tasty morsel. Keep food out of your pets’ reach. If this is not a possibility place them in a spare room until the food has been put away.

There are some table foods that your pet can have as a treat in small amounts. Some turkey meat or a little bit of potato may help you feel that you are including them in the festivities. However, too much of a good thing or any amount of the wrong thing can make for some unpleasant holiday memories. Discuss appropriate treats for your pet with your veterinarian to avoid a problem.
If your pet ingests any potentially toxic substance immediately contact your veterinarian and bring in a sample of the suspected food or plant source in its packaging. A more comprehensive listing of items your pet should avoid can be found at the Animal Poison Control Center website - http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/ or call them at: (888) 426-4435
