Go see the Senator at Big Tree Park
December 4th, 2009 11:18 AM
Ever see anything 3,500 years old? That’s still alive?

Go see the Senator at Big Tree Park

This Longwood park's main attraction is "The Senator", a 3500 year old Bald Cypress, one of the oldest and largest trees in America. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day of nature.
West of U.S. 17-92 on General Hutchinson Parkway

http://www.seminolecountyfl.gov/leisure ... igtree.pdf

Open daily from 8 am till sunset.

This park is located on the beautifully shaded General Hutchinson Parkway between U.S. 17-92 and State Road 427 north of Longwood. The park is a step back into time. You will see natural vegetation and marsh lands as you make your way on the boardwalk to "The Senator", the park's main attraction a 3,500 year old Bald Cypress. This property was donated to Seminole County by Senator M.O. Overstreet and dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1929.

While your there, might as well see Lady Liberty too. Located only 40 feet from the Senator is another old cypress named Lady Liberty. She is 89 feet high 10 feet in diameter, and is estimated to be a little younger at 2000 years old. There is only a 1,500 age difference :paranoid:

Picnic tables and restroom facilities are available in the front of the park. This is an 11 acre park that is open from 8:00 a.m. to sunset seven days a week 363 days a year.
Parks Close at 5pm on the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve. The park is closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The serene wetland scene soon turns to awe, as the “big tree” comes into view; this bald cypress named The Senator is 115 feet tall, 11 feet wide, with volume of 4,216 cubic feet. At an age of 3,500 years, it was sprouting during the Bronze Age, when Moses led the slaves into exodus, many years before King Tut would rule Egypt.

2009-10 Classical Concert Series Announced
December 18th, 2009 12:35 PM
2009-10 Classical Concert Series Announced
Classic Concert Series

The Celebration Foundation is pleased to announce the schedule for the eighth Annual Celebration Classical Concert Series. Last year we featured two new organizations; The Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and The Central Florida Brass Band, and because the reaction was so positive and because we almost sold-out both concerts, we have decided to bring them both back this year. The opening Brass Band Holiday Concert is quickly becoming a Celebration holiday season tradition. In place of the Orlando Opera, we will be seeing the Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra again after a three-year absence. And for the eighth consecutive year, the Orlando Philharmonic will be performing here. This will mark their 14th concert in Celebration.

This is the eighth year for the Foundation’s Classical Concert Series. The goal of the Series is to present the highest quality community classical concert series in Florida. The Series hopes to accomplish that by partnering with the best classical music organizations in Central Florida.

We are able to attract these outstanding organizations due to the generous financial support of businesses and individuals in Celebration, and due to the continued support of Community Presbyterian Church in Celebration.

The response to the Concert Series has been almost universally positive. The Four Corners Reporter in a review of last year’s Orlando Philharmonic Mozart concert raved “ I believe this was a fantastic concert. The conducting, soloists, ensemble, and venue all came together to make something really satisfying”. David Schillhammer, executive director of the Orlando Philharmonic, said at 2007’s sold-out Handel’s Messiah concert that “we only permit Orange TV to film and record concerts here in Celebration due to the church’s superior acoustics”.

Provided below is the schedule for this year’s Series:

December 6, 7:00 pm Brass Band of Central Florida “Annual Holiday Concert”

January 30, 7:30 pm Bach Festival Choir & Orchestra “75th Season Preview”

February 13, 7:30 pm Orlando Philharmonic “String Romance”

March 7, 4:00 pm Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra

You can now purchase Series tickets which includes preferred seating to all four concerts for $60 if purchased before November 10. Individual tickets will be available after November 10 and will be $20 per concert. All concerts will be held at Community Presbyterian Church in downtown Celebration. To purchase tickets or to get additional information please call The Celebration Foundation at 407-566-1234.

Fun, food and fur
December 18th, 2009 12:25 PM
Holidays = food, a lot of food and all sorts of variety. Oftentimes we can’t resist letting our pets enjoy some of the feast. However, we must be mindful of the foods our pets eat during the holidays.

The abundance of food during the holidays is the cause of many pets having stomach upset requiring medication or even surgery. Some foods are toxic to your pet. Avocados, chocolate, coffee and macadamia nuts are just a few of the foods that are poisonous to your pet. It is very easy for a determined pooch or feline to jump to unbelievable heights to acquire a tasty morsel. Keep food out of your pets’ reach. If this is not a possibility place them in a spare room until the food has been put away.

There are some table foods that your pet can have as a treat in small amounts. Some turkey meat or a little bit of potato may help you feel that you are including them in the festivities. However, too much of a good thing or any amount of the wrong thing can make for some unpleasant holiday memories. Discuss appropriate treats for your pet with your veterinarian to avoid a problem.
If your pet ingests any potentially toxic substance immediately contact your veterinarian and bring in a sample of the suspected food or plant source in its packaging. A more comprehensive listing of items your pet should avoid can be found at the Animal Poison Control Center website - http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/ or call them at: (888) 426-4435

For 35 years, the Museum was housed on the campus of Rollins College and known as the Morse Gallery of Art. In 1977, it was relocated to 151 East Welbourne Avenue in Winter Park, and its name was changed in the mid-1980s to The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art.

The Morse opened at its current location, 445 North Park Avenue, on July 4, 1995. The galleries were developed from former bank and office buildings. The redesign linked two buildings with a tower in a simple modified Mediterranean style meant to blend with the surrounding cityscape. In a further expansion in 1999, the Museum debuted its installation of the Tiffany Chapel from the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition.

Family Tours

Following each Friday night art demonstration, the Morse offers a docent tour through the galleries for the whole family. Learn about Louis Comfort Tiffany and American art of the late 19th- and early 20th- centuries.

Orlando Polar Bear Club
December 4th, 2009 11:17 AM

On Saturday, December 5, ICE! will open an hour early to welcome guests as they become official members of the Orlando Polar Bear Club. Afterwards, participants will be recognized at a "warm-up" coffee and cocoa reception, during an official induction into the club.

The special Orlando Polar Bear Club ticket is $21.99 plus tax, and includes the "afterglow" warm-up reception and a commemorative certificate, plus a chance to go through ICE! again later that morning, fully clothed, to better enjoy the artistry at a slower (and warmer) pace.

COST OF THE EVENT: $21.99
JOINING POLAR BEAR CLUB IN ORLANDO: PRICELESS

Throughout the United States, many Polar Bear Clubs raise money for local chapters of Special Olympics. In that tradition, $7 for every ticket sold will go to Special Olympics Florida.
Note: If you would like to participate in this activity, you may go through ICE! in a swimsuit or summerwear (like t-shirts and shorts). You must wear shoes to enter the attraction.

Image

Date: Saturday, December 5, 2009
Time: Official Orlando Polar Bear Club kick off at 8:30 a.m.(arrive between 7:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m.)
Location: ICE! at Gaylord Palms Resort
Directions: Take I-4 to Exit 65. Osceola Parkway East. Gaylord Palms is located at 6000 W Osceola Parkway, Kissimmee, 34746
Parking: Park in the Convention Center parking lot. Parking is $12 plus tax per vehicle. An "express exit" coupon for daily parking is available to Polar Bear Club participants, making parking $11, tax inclusive. Coupons will be available at the ICE! entrance.

What to wear: Um, a swimsuit! What else? To get the full Orlando Polar Bear Club experience, you'll want to walk through the ICE! attraction in your swimsuits. But, your suit must be in good taste — no thongs, please. (As an alternate to a swimsuit, you are welcome to wear summer clothing, such as shorts and a t-shirt... but, for the full chill, we encourage swimwear!)
